Description

One of my favorite things about my camera is its ability to shoot in extremely high bursts and shoot slow motion video, allowing me to see things that I would never notice. These features really come in handy whenever I photograph pelicans. When a heavy bird like a brown pelican takes off from open water, launching into flight requires substantial effort. Before they are fully airborne, they paddle aggressively, flap their massive wings to build lift, and give one final double-footed push right off the surface. If you look along the right side of the frame, you can see the splash erupting where the feet pushed off the water just as the wings reached full extension. Catching that split second between swimming and flight reveals just how much physical power goes into launching these seabirds. It’s such an interesting little detail that I noticed, and now I see it every time I watch a pelican take off.
