Description
One of my favorite encounters in all my time visiting Florida was seeing these baby sandhill cranes for the first time. About a week prior, I was out by the jetty photographing birds when I struck up a conversation with another photographer who mentioned a spot where a pair of cranes was nesting with a clutch of eggs. After checking back on the site over a few days, we arrived one morning to find the nest empty and the mother gone. After a few anxious minutes scanning the area, I spotted both parents and the newly hatched chicks across the road, and I ran to grab my gear.
I spent the next two hours having one of the coolest photography experiences of my life. These little chicks were only a few days old and stood less than three inches tall; they were the cutest little orange puffballs that I just could not get enough of. To capture this shot, I laid down on the grass completely flat with my lens pushed out in front of me so I could get right at eye level with them. I stayed as still and quiet as possible as they trotted by, capturing this wonderful moment of the two of them stepping out together across the meadow.
