Description
Black skimmers are among the most unique and specialized shorebirds you will ever see along the coast. They have a truly bizarre bill design where the lower mandible is significantly longer and thinner than the top, allowing them to slice cleanly through the water like a knife while in flight to catch fish by touch. Trying to track and photograph them while they hunt is a massive challenge because of their sheer speed, erratic turns, and low altitude.
Because they fly inches above the water, you have to get down to an extreme low angle to tell the story properly. For this shot, I laid flat on my stomach on the wet sand right at water level, tracking the bird head-on as it banked into the wind. After hundreds of missed frames and out-of-focus attempts from how fast they move, everything finally aligned. I caught the skimmer right as its bright orange and black bill knifed into the water, with the wings arched high in an incredible show of precision and agility.
