Standing Watch

Description

After years of photographing the Milky Way at Killbear, I wanted to branch out and challenge myself with a more intentional, hands-on foreground. I spent an hour walking around the campground searching for the right stones, carefully stacking small two-inch rocks along the granite to build this miniature statue. Balancing rough stones in the dark while keeping everything level was much harder than I expected, but I was so happy with how it turned out.

Getting my camera low to the Canadian shield allowed this tiny statue to stand tall against the horizon, looking as though it were watching over the bay. The soft warm glow on the water and the sweep of the Milky Way stretching straight into the heavens give the whole scene a quiet, grounded presence. These stone figures remind me of my deep connection to Canada and to be grateful for the rugged beauty of the Canadian Shield.
