They tuck their wings, streamline their bodies, and at the very last fraction of a second, pierce the water with their beak. I have watched pelicans dive straight into four-foot crashing waves without hesitation. The aerial calculation, speed, and sheer toughness it takes to hit the surf at that speed is almost impossible to imagine.
