The Tree Under Rising Stars

Description

This image holds a very special place in my heart. For several years, I had been visiting Killbear to shoot standard night landscapes, but after first discovering star trail photos online, I was instantly fascinated. It was one of the coolest visual effects I had ever seen. I spent dozens of hours studying the technique and figuring out the camera settings, and when I went camping later that year, I finally put everything into practice to create my first successful star trail image.

Star trails reveal the relative motion of the stars across the night sky caused by Earth’s rotation. To create this image, I set up my camera on a tripod around midnight and shot consecutive exposures continuously for about three hours. Each light streak traces the path of a star as the planet turned, and because the camera was angled toward the rising sky, the trails form dynamic diagonal streaks cutting across the vivid blue atmosphere behind the windswept pine.
