Description
When I first started shooting star trails, I noticed that the streaks behaved differently depending on where I pointed the camera. Sometimes they swept straight across the horizon, other times they curved upward, and sometimes they made complete circular paths. Researching the Earth’s rotation and the position of the constellations revealed why. Earth rotates on an axis that aligns with Polaris, the North Star. When you point your lens directly at Polaris, the stars appear to revolve around that single stationary anchor point.
That knowledge made composing on the Lighthouse Trail an exciting challenge. I had to pinpoint the North Star in the dark, aim the camera directly at it, and carefully frame the historic red-and-white lighthouse so the circular arcs would spin right above the lantern. After hours of aligning the composition and monitoring exposures until 4:00 AM, the result was this hypnotic vortex of starlight guarding the coast.
